Welcome back to our little corner of the internet! Apologies for the short break, I am currently travelling. Today, I wanted to look into 5 strange facts about AI. Let’s begin!

#1 – AI Has Citizenship?

In October of 2017, Hong Kong-based Hanson Robotics’ very own humanoid robot, coined as “Sophia”, was granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia. She was the first ever machine to receive legal personhood in any country! Sophia uses an amazing blend of AI, speech recognition and computer vision to function. Sophia has visited India and even spoken to the UN!

“I am here to help humanity create the future.”

#2 – AI Pets – for real this time?

Although living creatures will forever be completely irreplaceable, pet-bot developers argue that they have a few setbacks. These are things like the need for a special diet, training and cleaning up after them. AI Bot-pets would not have those problems, but still feature the lovable parts of animals and replicate their appearance. It is apparently expected to see these in the market as early as 2025!

The real question is: is it ethical to replace living creatures with bots?

#3 – AI – but smarter than us?

Whilst AI is arguably never going to be able to replicate human consciousness (or at least not any time soon), thanks to its ability to learn (or rather analyse) a vast expanse of topics, it is estimated that in the next few years, AI’s knowledge will become superior to (most) humans! A study says that a decade ago (as of 2013), AI had the same intelligence level as a 4 year old. The same study predicts that AI will “out-brain” the average adult by 2029. That’s just six years away!

#4 – A Forgotten Use Case

One of the (mostly) lesser-known uses of AI is actually in an unexpected field. AI has been helping farmers for a while now, through apps like AgSpeak (created by students from IIT-Guwahati, NIT-Silchar and Dibrugarh University), which helps farmers monitor distress activities and manage their farm. The app is multi-lingual, allowing an international audience to enjoy the help of the app. If you’re interested in learning more about this fascinating idea, you can find here.

#5 – The Meaning of Being Human?

Despite our consistent efforts as humans, it is generally considered that AI will never be able to understand the true feeling of what it means to be human. AI can’t actively understand experiences or emotions the way we can. I love the way Google puts it in their blog, saying that “we’re complex, multidimensional characters that sit outside the data that machines use to make sense of things”. Personally, I believe that is one of the things that restrains AI, and keeps it from becoming superior to humans. But what do you think?

Thank you for reading this one, and I apologise once again for not being as active for the last few days. If you enjoyed this, leave a few claps, a comment and a follow behind. See you in the next one!
